Black Lantern: Secret Origins

Billions of years ago, Chthonic entities across the universe were the ultimate judges of life and death. They were the faces of transition from one state of existence to another, the records-keepers of the past, and the ones who heard the cries of those wrongfully robbed of life.

Many entities which we know today, each had their place in a sort of cosmic tribunal. Hades, the lord of the Greek afterlife, and two personifications of Death, Thanatos & Celesta, were some familiar names. In fact, Celesta was one of Hades' sisters.

Even Nekron was once part of this association. But Nekron chose a wicked path, and was collectively cast out, even by the standards of Death itself.

It was due to Nekron's destructive scheming billions of years ago, that seeds of dissent were planted among the various representatives. Rather than risk their own hand being the trigger of the very destruction they sought to prevent from occurring by the banished Nekron's behavior, the beings all made a final vote as a collective to go their separate ways and let nature take it's inevitable course.

For eons, this "live and let die" policy survived. Beings went to separate afterlife realms, based on beliefs, desires, and whom their cultures held sacred.

Then Nekron resurfaced, and through Scar and William Hand instigated a massive takeover bid to overthrow and revenge himself against the Death entities who banished him so long ago. Forging the first Black battery, he planned to use the deaths of countless souls, to empower him. Essentially stealing lives who were designated for other afterlife realms, for his own use.

The living fought back, and Nekron was once more banished to his prison. But the damage was done, the remains of the corrupted Oan technology lay waiting to be used again.

Death of The Endless took notice of these events, and began an odyssey to seek out the others once more. Although there were age-old reservations, a summit was agreed to be held.

The debate was at times heated, but eventually the consensus was agreed that mortals had grown since those early days. That the Death entities could no longer afford to play favorites, and that although Nekron stole and used the Oan technology for his own gain, the overall goals of the various Corps now existing did make quite an impression on the universe.

To prevent Nekron from ever using this weapon against them again, the Death entities decided to confiscate the remains and completely overhaul it for their own protection and the protection of the universe as well. No longer would they hide. Instead, they agreed to take responsibility for the Black battery, and resume their duties as a united group once more. They each would now become it's guardians.

Death of The Endless was elected to take the first of the new Black Lantern batteries and rings to Earth, and choose a living mortal facing the willing sacrifice of his own death without fear or regrets, as a worthy champion to be the first to represent the newly re-constructed and redesigned corps.

She chose a mortal named Casander Mackler. Rising from death as a Black Lantern, Casander now represents sector 2814, seeking justice on behalf of those who are no longer alive...
